About the Lake

Lake Shasta is as beautiful as it is large. It was created in 1937 to provide irrigation and water storage. The dam is located at a narrow part of the Sacramento River, just below the confluence of it and the Pit and McCloud Rivers. The water backs up into all three rivers and countless other creeks and bays. Part of what makes Shasta so special is the almost endless shoreline and all of the different places that you can cast ashore. There are also so many different vistas, including visions of the volcanos known as Shasta and Lassen.

We always make a point to visit Shasta Caverns, right across the lake from O'Brien. There is plenty of space to tie up your houseboat, and the ride up the mountain is fun. At the top, a group leader walks you into the cave and talks about the formations.

I've heard many leaders give this tour and no two were alike. Each leader gave us different interpretations of the formations - my favorite was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves".

By the way, this is a walking tour - there is no need to crawl as you do in other caves. Boy there are a lot of steps though! Access to the cave is at O'Brien where a ferry will take you over. Or just park your houseboat at the shore near the caverns marina. A short bus trip completes the journey to the cave.
