Springtime Lake Shasta

We've had many delightful houseboat trips to Lake Shasta, but my personal favorites were those in the Spring, in April or May. The air is fresh and the weather is still mild, wildflowers bloom everywhere. Most of all, the fishing is outstanding! In contrast to summer, the lake is still cool and uncrowded. But this makes it just the right time to catch a bunch of rainbow trout or spotted bass.

We usually start our trip by stopping by one of the local tackle shops on the way to the lake. Our favorite is Phil's Props and Tackle in Redding. They have a full line of bass and trout lures, and they can tip you on the best way to fish. A bucket of minnows or crawdads is also handy.

There are many places to rent houseboats. We've rented from Bridgebay Resort and Holiday Harbor. Both gave us great service. When there are only four of us, we usually get the six person boat from Holiday Harbor. It's smaller than most houseboats, making it easier to maneuver, but it still has all the amenities, like a hot shower and a complete kitchen. The only thing it doesn't have is a 110 volt generator, but we've found we can do without. (It's nice to have though if you absolutely need to blow dry your hair!)
